First it was the front door, then the trunk. Now Amazon can have the delivery person drop off your ecommerce order inside the garage, which may or may not feel as intrusive as it’s not living space.
Key by Amazon has now been extended to allow deliveries through the garage door. It’s available to Prime members using myQ technology from Chamberlain Group that allows delivery drivers to access their garage through a smart lock system.
Helpfully, the ecommerce giant is offering a deal on myQ that makes garage doors compatible with Key.
“In garage delivery” is now a fulfillment option at checkout. Prime members can also use the Key app to check the status of their garage door and remotely open or close it.
Customers with a myQ-connected garage door opener can link their Amazon and myQ accounts in the Key app; those without one have two different myQ packages available, with an optional Amazon Cloud Cam to keep an eye on things.
The company has also expanded Key availability to 50 U.S. cities, after adding 13 more with its garage news, including Charlotte, NC; Columbus, OH; Fresno, CA; Grand Rapids, MI; Hartford, CT; Las Vegas, NV; Norfolk, VA; Oklahoma City, OK; Omaha, NE; Rochester, NY; Stockton, CA; Virginia Beach, VA; and Wilmington, DE.
Amazon has also rolled out Key for Business, which lets couriers unlock buildings with a special fob to drop off items when no one is in the building.
Word on the street is that Santa is actively lobbying for a Key by Amazon: Chimney Edition checkout option to be available this holiday season.
