Free Returns Offered by More Merchants Than Ever

What were some of the major themes in handling holiday 2015 returns? Patrick Allard, Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Newgistics, a Multichannel Merchant Top 3PL for 2016, recently spoke with MCM Senior Editor Mike O’Brien on what his company observed from working with its 450+ retail customers.

Some of the takeaways:

  • The growth in ecommerce orders over the holiday season – up 13% to $69.1 billion, according to comScore – fueled a commensurate surge in returns. Allard said Newgistics clients saw increases between 18% and 35% over holiday 2014.
  • More retailers than ever are offering free returns and other perks to customers, further driving the growth.
  • Returns policies in general have become more generous to drive sales, Allard said, while promotions are offered earlier and earlier.

Allard will also be discussing the subject at Operations Summit 2016, April 12-14 at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, in a session entitled “How An Exceptional Returns Experience Can Improve Your Profitability.”
